Your coach has officially done one full year around the sun in his 30s. Turning 31, here's a few things I learned in the past year:

1) Be real and be honest with yourself. You can spend your time pretending you're still in shape like your 22, or you can be honest about where you are right now and the changes you need to make to your daily habits. This applies to more than just health and wellness šŸ˜‰...

2) Be nice to yourself. This body has been with me for 31 years. We went through ankle sprains, chronic knee and hip pain, shoulder injuries, performance anxiety, failures, successes, and a whole lot more together. Every day that I wake up and have an opportunity to move my body, I'm grateful because I know what it's like to live a life with pain.

3) Show up for yourself. In my "younger" days, I used to get my motivation externally. I wanted to be better at basketball than the people around me. Admittedly, I loved the perks that come with having a muscular body; the world is MUCH nicer to people who "look fit". Through the lens of wisdom, I see now that those motivators were actually causing me a lot of anxiety because it felt like I had to keep up an image for someone else. In this season of my life, I go to the gym and eat (relatively) healthy because I want to feel good and be happy.

My birthday was amazing. If you were in the DMV this weekend, you know the sun was LOVING us. I have a tradition that I ALWAYS play basketball on my birthday. Even if I just dribble a ball, I have to play on my birthday. It's a reminder to stay grounded in what makes me happy. Check me out making a bad shot and not even thinking about passing it to my wide open teammate.

Should I Use Ice or Heat?

When my Athletes/friends/family get injured, I usually get this question. Unfortunately, I have to give the dreaded response everyone hates: "It depends". Both have their purposes and should be used accordingly or you could have counterproductive results.

Here's when you should use ice:

  • Acute bone injury
    • Bang your toe against furniture
  • Post-exercise recovery
    • Icing your shin splints
  • Decrease inflammation
    • Swollen/sore ankles

Here's when you should use heat:

  • Stiff joints/muscles
    • Heating pad on lower back
  • Releasing tight muscles
    • Heating pad on neck/upper back
  • Pre-exercise prep
    • Heating pad on knees or lower back to increase blood flow to an area or "warm up"

In my personal opinion, the answer to the question is "both". Ice and heat can and should be used together for optimal performance. It's the logic behind IcyHot: after a workout, you use ice to decrease inflammation, before you use heat to reintroduce blood flow which increases warmth and supports the recovery process.

The beat, the sample, the verses...this is hip-hop. To me, hip-hop is about expression and sometimes, rappers can express things for us that we aren't able to. This song speaks for the people from the trenches that are underrated, misunderstood, and going through it.
